Pittsburgh came in at No. 10 on Prevention magazine's 2009 list of the 25 most walkable cities in the United States.
The appointment of the city's first pedestrian/bicycle coordinator, Stephen Patchan, last year was the reason Pittsburgh made the list. Last year's list was a top 10 list that did not include Pittsburgh.
Metropolitan areas were evaluated based on 19 criteria that include population density per square mile, use of mass transit, crime rates and square miles of local and state parks. Prevention, the American Podiatric Medical Association and Sperling's Best Places also consulted with a panel of nationally recognized experts in the field of walking communities.
The top 10 cities, in order, are: San Francisco, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, Seattle, Honolulu, Portland, Ore., and Pittsburgh.
